About Mauro Panaggio

Mauro Panaggio: A Lifetime of Basketball Excellence

Mauro Panaggio’s name is synonymous with winning basketball at every level of the game. From his early days in Rochester to his decades long coaching career, Panaggio left a legacy defined by discipline, innovation, and success.

Early Years and Playing Career

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Mauro Panaggio excelled as a multi sport athlete at Madison High School. He played varsity basketball for three years, graduating in 1946, and twice earned All Scholastic honors. In 1945, he led the Rochester City League in scoring. His ability to lead, compete, and inspire teammates was evident long before his coaching career began.

After high school, Panaggio attended Canisius College in Buffalo for one season. As one of only two freshmen to make the varsity team, he quickly earned a reputation as a strong scorer and defensive leader. The following year, he transferred to the State University of New York at Brockport, where he became the centerpiece of the basketball program. From 1948 to 1951, Panaggio led Brockport in scoring three straight years, served as captain for two seasons, and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player each year. By his graduation in 1952, he was the school’s all time leading scorer and a respected figure on campus. After college, he briefly played for the Elmira Colonels in the American Basketball League, gaining professional experience before transitioning to coaching.

High School Coaching Success

Panaggio began his coaching career in the 1950s at Wellsville High School in western New York. His early success there opened the door to the Rochester City School District, where he built powerhouse programs at Franklin High School in the late 1950s and East High School in the early 1960s. His teams were disciplined, hard working, and consistently among the best in the state. In an era without a true statewide championship, Panaggio’s teams dominated Section V competition. Over roughly 14 years of high school coaching, including a season at Rush Henrietta, his record was approximately 240 wins against only 42 losses. His teams captured 11 league titles and 2 Section V championships. He never had a team finish lower than second place in its league. Panaggio’s leadership and attention to detail made him one of New York’s most respected high school coaches.

Building a College Powerhouse at SUNY Brockport

In 1967, Panaggio returned to his alma mater, SUNY Brockport, where he began a remarkable 10 year run as head basketball coach. Taking over a modest program, he quickly built a winner. His teams won four conference championships and twice advanced to the NCAA College Division, now Division III, Final Four. During his nine seasons as head coach, Brockport compiled a record of 166 wins and 79 losses, becoming one of the premier small college programs in the country. Panaggio’s teams were known for their discipline, defensive intensity, and teamwork. His coaching philosophy emphasized fundamentals, preparation, and respect for the game. Many of his players went on to successful careers in teaching, coaching, and athletics administration, continuing the values they learned from him.

Professional Coaching Career

After leaving Brockport in 1977, Panaggio became the first head coach of the Rochester Zeniths in the Continental Basketball Association. He led the Zeniths to league championships in 1979 and 1981, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in the league. Over the next two decades, he coached the Quad City Thunder, Rockford Lightning, Bay State Bombardiers, San Diego Wildcards, and Shreveport Storm. His teams were known for hard nosed defense, precision offense, and relentless effort. He earned the CBA Coach of the Year award three times and retired as the league’s all time winningest coach, with more than 400 victories and a career winning percentage over 60 percent. One of his most memorable moments came in 1992 when he coached against his son, Dan, the first father and son head coaching matchup in professional basketball.

Legacy of Excellence

Across high school, college, and professional basketball, Mauro Panaggio won more than 800 games and set a standard for integrity and success that few have matched. He was inducted into the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame, the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, and the SUNY Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame. Panaggio’s influence extended far beyond his records and championships. He was a teacher, mentor, and role model who believed that sports could shape character and build leaders. His players remembered him not only for his coaching skill but for his compassion, fairness, and commitment to excellence. Mauro Panaggio passed away in 2018 at the age of 90. His legacy continues through the annual Mauro Panaggio Tournament and through the generations of players and coaches who learned from his example.
